Personality Matching
Do you have an idea of what your perfect investment would be?
I guess so, most
people
will say that their perfect investment is one that is secure
and returns them
good
growth. But this is not necessarily always the case because
the perfect
investment
that you seek is not determined solely by the characteristics
of the
investment
– but more often than not your personality itself is just
as important.
When
your personality, judgement and
goals are all flowing as one, there is more
chance
of you having better results.
For our Advisors to match investors with investments is a complicated
task-even without personality considerations.
Since
investments differ widely you should think about the potential
returns, whether the investment generates income
or requires additional cash over its life, the risk involved,
the flexibility. In addition, you have to consider how much
control you have over the investment versus how much control
you want.
Do you have an idea of what matching a personality to an investment
means? Most people immediately conjure up
the term Risk Tolerance when thinking of investor personalities.
Someone who says “I would never take a risk with
my money” would probably be invested in fixed-term deposits,
bonds and possibly cash. But if this person ends up
owning
a savings plan or investment that is full of Emerging Markets,
Hedge Funds, Futures and Derivatives – that
person
is not going to get much sleep!
Risk tolerance is important when matching people’s personality
to their investment profile, but is only one of many
personality
traits that need to be considered before you even get close
to achieving that tailor-made financial solution
you
are looking for. Other personality trust, confidence or lack
of it, pride and greed also enter into the equation and
make
an impact on how satisfied you feel with your overall financial
profile.
The influence you have on the outcome of an investment varies
dramatically from investment to investment, vehicle to
vehicle. Owning a small proportion of a large company gives
you essentially no control. Owning a property that you
are
leasing out essentially gives you the control over its décor,
its tenants and ultimately of course its rent.
This may be a general conception, but we have found that people
who want to be actively involved with and have a
sense
of control over their financial portfolio, report a higher level
of satisfaction if they perceive that they do actually
have some sense of control. For example, they often feel more
satisfied with their real estate investments than their
funds.
Despite the fact that the whims of the marketplace will have
a dramatic impact on either investment, owners of
rental properties frequently feel they have much more control
than owners of investments in funds of equivalent value.
In essence, it is what you perceive that becomes your reality,
not what may actually be true. People act in response
to
their subjective reality and not the objective reality. This
is what makes the investing process so personal and
makes
it so critical for all of us to understand ourselves first to
gain the greatest amount of satisfaction. This is why,
by
talking to one of our Advisors who are highly skilled at getting
to the bottom of the real ‘you’, they may not
immediately
ascertain what is the real ‘you’ but will most certainly
ask strategic questions and provide insights that
will
importantly, help you to establish the answer to the question
‘what is the real me’?
For our Advisors to find the real "you" in your investment
profile is never an easy thing to do and this does take
time.
But the first important step is self-awareness and then closely
followed by consideration of what you would
like
to achieve.
Most importantly though we feel, is the integration of your
personality traits with the characteristics of your
investments. It is these that afford the greatest percentage
chance of a tailor-made specific financial package to
be
created for you and in turn, that package providing matching
what you are looking for with your Investment
Personality.
